Lentz was born in Isabella County (Mich.) on May 6, 1924, the son of Laura Belle (Humphrey) Lentz and James Albert Lentz. He grew up in St. Louis (Mich.). Lentz graduated from St. Louis High School in 1942 and earned a B.S. from Michigan State University in 1946. He worked for the Michigan Chemical Corp. and Columbia Southern Chemical Corp. before joining Dow Corning Corp.'s Research Dept. in 1955.
